Equity Framework > Levels of Action > Systems
Working at this level focuses on the systems, structures, and processes that create inequities. A system is the relationships among interconnected structures and people. Inequities are embedded in larger social and economic systems. Understanding the role of systemic structures in contributing to child and family inequities is an essential skill. If the systems that produce inequitable child and family well-being outcomes can be understood, then action can be taken to change these systems and outcomes.
Lasting solutions to inequities require systems change. Action at the systems level seeks to change inequitable structures and transform underlying power dynamics, relationships, narratives, and histories that sustain these structures.
Consider: Who holds the balance of privilege and power in system decision making? How is child and family well-being impacted by relative advantage and disadvantage? How does racism, classism, sexism, or ableism, for example, show up in systems? How will such inequities be addressed?
